Come with us and take a journey back in time to learn about our County's rich and proud heritage. Browsing these pages you will discover how the County’s Old Jail, located next to the 1838 Jefferson-inspired Courthouse, has been turned into a Museum. Our Gallery and Sales areas are open for your shopping and viewing pleasure along with Society and County events. The Links will provide you transport to other sites of interest. Visit often as we are always adding new content. This Society was formed to bring together people interested in history, and especially in the history of Greene County. Understanding the history of our community is basic to our democratic way of life, gives us a better understanding of our state and nation, and promotes a better appreciation of our American heritage. The Society has two major functions: first, to discover and collect material that helps to establish or illustrate the history of the area; its explorations, settlement, development, and activities in peace and in war. We have collections for display and research of printed material such as histories, genealogies and biographies; manuscript material such as letters, diaries and journals; and artifacts such as pictures, photographs, paintings, portraits, scenes and other material objects that illustrate life, conditions, events and activities in the County from the earliest settlement by Native American Indians. The Society’s second major function is to facilitate genealogical research. Visit in person to use our 100,000+ person database and numerous family histories for family research. Or click on the Genealogy Link and fill in the simple query form to send us a genealogy information request.
