Shenandoah National Park

Skyline Drive

This 105-mile road winds along the crest of the mountains through the length of the Shenandoah National Park and provides priceless views of the luxurious rolling landscape to the east and the west. Driving on Skyline Drive is a particular treat in the fall when the leaves all along the road and through the valleys change to a canvas of bright and sensational colors.

For an alternative to driving, hop on a bike to see these breath taking views.  With a speed limit of only 35 mph for vehicle traffic, Skyline Drive is a comfortable place to bicycle.  While there are plenty of climbs and descents, most hills are about a mile long with moderate grades.  Pack snacks or stop by Big Meadows Wayside for a bite to eat (open seasonally) - a must:  Blackberry Ice Cream Pie or the Blackberry milkshake.  At the end of the day, climb back in the car and drive over to one of the nearest west facing overlooks to experience the beauty of a mountaintop sunset.  Be sure to stay until the sun goes behind the distant hills for the best colors to appear!
