Shenandoah National Park
Road bike; 45 miles; extremely strenuous
Begin in Stanardsville (park at the commuter lot in the Town of Stanardsville at the school complex) and head west on Route 33 to the Swift Run Gap Entrance of the Shenandoah National Park. Turn right and head south on Skyline Drive for 14 miles to Loft Mountain Wayside (MM 79.5). This section of Skyline Drive has slightly less traffic than heading north on Skyline but equally great views. Loft Mountain Wayside offers plenty of food options which might just reenergize you to continue south on the 1 mile steep climb to Loft Mountain campsites before heading back.
NOTE: Route 33 has challenging grades, a high volume of traffic and a small portion of the road without a shoulder. Only serious bicyclists who are comfortable riding with traffic should attempt this ride.
