Montpelier is the home of James Madison, Father of the Constitution, architect of the Bill of Rights and president of the United States. Visit Montpelier to experience the "Presidential Detective Story," the worldwide search for the furnishings, décor and plantation landscape that once graced the Madisons' beloved home. Your Montpelier tour will show you how curators and archaeologists uncover and connect evidence to reveal James and Dolley Madison's personalities and style. See the latest finds including the red, flocked Drawing Room wallpaper and a chess set like the one James Madison and Thomas Jefferson used to play on, acquired based on fragments discovered in the ground. You can even walk in James Madison's footsteps in the second floor library where he imagined the Constitution. At Montpelier visitors of all ages enjoy hands-on activities, archaeology, two galleries, a cafe and the chance to stroll the stunning garden and miles of forest trails on the 2,650-acre estate. Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Montpelier is located in the heart of Virginia's wine country on Route 20, four miles south of Orange and 25 miles northeast of Charlottesville.
